European Aviation Sector Warns of Looming Jet Fuel Shortages Amid Geopolitical Tension
The European aviation industry is facing a potential jet fuel crisis that could disrupt the upcoming peak summer travel season. The Airports Council International (ACI) has issued an urgent warning to the European Commission, calling for immediate intervention to stabilize the supply of aviation fuel and mitigate risks to the broader European economy.
The instability is primarily driven by the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil transport. This supply chain disruption follows a significant escalation on April 5, 2026, when Iranian attacks caused severe damage to oil facilities in Kuwait. The resulting volatility has sent aviation fuel prices soaring, with costs now more than double their previous values, placing immense pressure on airlines already struggling with rising operational expenses. This has led to widespread rising fuel costs across the region.
Industry leaders are now urging emergency measures from Brussels to prevent systemic failures. The ACI is calling on the European Commission to implement a comprehensive monitoring system to assess current and projected fuel stocks against demand. Proposed solutions include the removal of import restrictions, the exploration of collective purchasing agreements, and a rigorous evaluation of both commercial and strategic reserves to identify alternative import sources.
Even as much of the continent remains vulnerable, some regional hubs are better positioned. Brussels Airport has remained largely insulated from these shortages due to its integration with the NATO pipeline. According to ACI spokesperson Agata Lysnik, the airport is “fully supplied via the NATO pipeline,” which transports kerosene directly from refineries in Antwerp and Rotterdam. This infrastructure significantly reduces Belgium’s reliance on shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Brussels Airlines has stated that We see “at this moment not aware of fuel shortages.” Yet, the broader industry remains on high alert as EU officials express concern over delivery problems that could materialize in the near future. The situation has created significant uncertainty for travelers, leading to questions regarding whether summer vacations are at risk.
The current crisis underscores the fragility of the European aviation supply chain and the critical importance of strategic infrastructure, like the NATO pipeline, in maintaining economic stability during periods of intense geopolitical volatility.
