Climate activists disrupted shipping operations off the coast of Australia on Tuesday, forcing a coal carrier to turn back before reaching the country’s largest coal export port. Eleven individuals were subsequently arrested, police said.

Authorities in New South Wales state reported that those detained face charges related to maritime offenses stemming from the protest near the Port of Newcastle, located approximately 106 miles (170 kilometers) north of the state capital, Sydney. A spokesperson for the Port of Newcastle stated that one vessel was prevented from entering the harbor, but that shipping traffic was otherwise unaffected and is expected to continue as scheduled.

The disruption, carried out by the climate action group Rising Tide, involved small boats and swimmers entering the shipping channel, ultimately compelling the coal ship to reverse course. The incident highlights the increasing willingness of environmental groups to directly intervene in the fossil fuel supply chain.
