Coquimbo Unido claimed the Chilean Super Cup title on Sunday, defeating Universidad Católica in a dramatic penalty shootout after a scoreless draw.

The match ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, but Coquimbo Unido prevailed 8-7 in the shootout – with both teams converting ten attempts – to secure the first trophy of the 2026 season and send their fans into celebration.

The contest at Sausalito Stadium was a tightly contested affair, with both sides battling for control throughout. Universidad Católica, the current league champion, generally looked the more likely to break the deadlock.

However, Universidad Católica were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Vicente Bernedo, who made several key saves to keep his team in the match.

Coquimbo Unido’s goalkeeper, Diego ‘Mono’ Sánchez, proved to be equally crucial, particularly during the penalty shootout. The veteran shot-stopper saved two penalties, while Universidad Católica also missed one attempt, handing Coquimbo Unido another trophy after winning their first title at the end of 2025.

“We haven’t lost since April, that’s a great feeling,” Sánchez said after the match, adding to his impressive performance by making saves without gloves.

This victory marks Coquimbo Unido’s second consecutive trophy under manager Hernán Caputto, continuing their impressive run of form.

Super Cup ‘Final Four’ Format

This year’s Super Cup was the first to be decided by a ‘final four’ format, similar to competitions in Spain and other European countries.

The change in format was part of a deal reached with TNT Sports to resolve a significant financial debt owed by the Chilean football commission.

Universidad Católica reached the final by defeating Copa Chile champion Huachipato 4-2 in the semi-finals. Coquimbo Unido advanced after overcoming Copa Chile 2025 runner-up Limache 3-2.
