New Power Delivery Solutions Aim to Prevent GPU Cable Overheating Risks
As high-end graphics cards push power demands to new extremes, two major PC hardware manufacturers have introduced redesigned power cables to address safety concerns that have plagued recent GPU generations. ASUS and Corsair have each developed solutions to prevent the overheating issues that have led to melted cables and damaged components in some systems.

The push for more robust power delivery comes as graphics cards like NVIDIA’s RTX 40 and 50 series have demonstrated the limitations of traditional 12V-2×6 PCIe cables under heavy loads. These next-generation GPUs can draw up to 600W of power, creating thermal challenges that standard cables weren’t designed to handle.
ASUS ROG Equalizer: Patented Load Balancing for Safer Power Delivery
ASUS has introduced its ROG Equalizer cable, which features a patented design that doubles the current capacity of standard 12V-2×6 cables. While conventional cables are rated for 9.2A per wire, the ROG Equalizer supports up to 17A per wire, significantly improving durability under continuous 600W loads.

The company conducted extreme testing to demonstrate the cable’s thermal advantages. In a simulated scenario where four middle wires were disabled to create severe load imbalance, a standard cable reached temperatures of approximately 146°C—well beyond safe operating limits. The ROG Equalizer, under identical conditions, maintained temperatures around 73.4°C, staying well below the 105°C material limit.
“The ROG Equalizer ensures balanced current delivery from PSU to graphics card,” ASUS stated in its product documentation. “This lowers connector temperatures and maintains stable thermal performance under extreme conditions.”
The cable features several additional enhancements, including:
- Individual wire braiding for improved durability
- Adjustable cable comb with ROG branding
- Dual-color system to confirm proper insertion
- Three-year warranty
- Full ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 compatibility
ASUS is offering the ROG Equalizer at a discounted price of $50 for owners of compatible ROG power supply units, positioning it as a premium safety upgrade for high-performance systems.
Corsair ThermalProtect: Temperature Monitoring for 600W Power Delivery
Corsair has taken a different approach with its 600W PCIe 5.1 power cable, which incorporates ThermalProtect technology to monitor and manage cable temperatures. The company’s solution focuses on real-time temperature sensing to prevent overheating before it becomes dangerous.
Testing revealed that the Corsair cable maintains more consistent temperatures across all wires during high-load scenarios. While standard cables can develop hot spots due to uneven current distribution, the ThermalProtect system helps balance power delivery to reduce thermal stress.
The Corsair cable is priced under $20, making it a more affordable option compared to the ASUS solution. It’s designed specifically for Corsair Type-4 power supplies and is fully compatible with the latest PCIe 5.0 graphics cards.

Industry Response to Power Delivery Challenges
The introduction of these enhanced power cables reflects growing concerns about the safety of high-wattage graphics cards. Reports of melted connectors and damaged components have raised questions about whether current power delivery standards are adequate for next-generation hardware.

Both solutions address the fundamental issue of uneven current distribution that can occur in standard 12V-2×6 cables. By either balancing the load across all wires (ASUS) or actively monitoring temperatures (Corsair), these cables aim to prevent the thermal runaway that has caused problems in some systems.
The developments approach as manufacturers continue to push the boundaries of GPU performance, with power requirements that were unthinkable just a few years ago. As graphics cards approach and exceed 600W power draw, the importance of reliable power delivery becomes increasingly critical for system stability and longevity.
While the ASUS and Corsair solutions grab different technical approaches, both represent critical steps toward safer high-power computing. The availability of these cables gives system builders more options to protect their investments in high-end graphics hardware.
The new ROG Equalizer cable from ASUS is a game-changer for high-power GPU setups. With load balancing and temperature management, it addresses the biggest safety concerns with 600W+ graphics cards. https://t.co/example
