David Jaffe Slams God of War Fans & Defends His YouTube Work

David Jaffe, the creator of the God of War series, has responded to fan reaction to his video discussing God of War Sons of Sparta, which he described as “complete garbage.” He alleges that fans consistently respond to his critiques in the same way, attacking him rather than engaging with his points, particularly when he comments on their favorite platform or the God of War franchise. According to Jaffe, the criticism stems from resentment over his lack of continued involvement with the series.

Jaffe’s Response

Jaffe began a new video stating, “This proves I’m not angry about the issue, and anyone who wants to label me as such is way off base. I loved God of War from 2018 and God of War Ragnarok Valhalla, I enjoyed some games for the PSP, and I also loved the Twisted Metal TV series.” He continued, “Every time something is negative, some people create the narrative that you can’t seize what I say seriously because I’m ‘involved.’ But that’s not the case.”

“I love my work on YouTube. I’m happier doing this job than I ever was creating video games. I’m sorry if that doesn’t fit into the list of ‘noble’ jobs you consider, but I wake up every day and talk to people from all over the world. I enjoy sharing it, whether you like it or respect it. I just wish that for a moment you would consider that sometimes a person can be critical without any ulterior motive: they simply don’t like something.”

Many critics attempt to discredit those who express opinions, and Jaffe says he’s had enough. He currently works from home discussing video games, and enjoys it. He also expressed a desire to discuss other topics he loves, such as politics or UFOs, but noted that this often provokes backlash from video game fans who prefer he stick to gaming. “But I can have a space to do that, and I enjoy it. If you think my work isn’t the best, then do the job yourselves.”

After a general statement, Jaffe addressed accusations that he should be more creative or is in denial: “That’s not true. Creating video games requires enormous effort, including internal politics, team management, and endless pressure. I’ve also tried making comics and movies, but the fun part is seeing the finished result, not the exhausting process that allows you to get there.” He added that the video game industry is even more challenging today than when he worked in it, and he has no intention of subjecting himself to that kind of stress again.

“Today, the work I do on YouTube and streaming is much more like the freedom I had in the past within a company, compared to creating AAA video games with hundreds of millions of dollars. Before, I could brainstorm during the weekend and propose ideas to my boss without having to get approvals from dozens of departments. Now, with budgets of $400-500 million, every single decision has to head through marketing, management, internal politics, manipulations, convincing artists to do things they don’t want to do… it’s a nightmare.”

“If you like this kind of work, feel free to do it. I don’t, even if I were paid to. For me, the best job is the one I have now: creating content, interacting with the community, sharing my passions without having to go around a thousand rules and compromises.”

The average score for God of War Sons of Sparta is not particularly high

The release of God of War Sons of Sparta, a 2D side-scroller, has sparked debate about the direction of the franchise and the role of creator input in spin-off titles. Jaffe’s comments highlight the challenges of balancing fan expectations with creative freedom in the modern gaming landscape.
