A shakeup at the top of Microsoft Gaming will see Phil Spencer step down, with Asha Sharma named as the new head of Xbox. The move, reported by IGN, marks a significant shift in leadership for the gaming giant as it navigates an evolving entertainment landscape increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and cloud technologies.
Spencer will depart as CEO of Microsoft Gaming on Monday, February 23, 2026, after initiating conversations with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella months prior. “Last fall, I told Satya I was thinking about stepping back and starting the next chapter in my life,” Spencer explained in a message to staff, characterizing the transition as planned. Concurrent with Spencer’s departure, Sarah Bond has resigned from her position as President of Xbox. This resignation was not framed as a succession plan, but rather as a separate decision coinciding with Spencer’s move.
Taking the helm is Asha Sharma, previously President of CoreAI, Microsoft’s division focused on product and artificial intelligence. Sharma joined Microsoft in 2024, bringing with her a background in product and engineering leadership from Meta, where she served as VP of Product and Engineering, and Instacart, where she was COO. She also has served on the board of The Home Depot. Her expertise lies in large-scale platforms and product development, rather than direct management of the Xbox business.
The restructuring extends beyond the executive leadership. Matt Booty, currently leading Xbox Game Studios, will be promoted to Chief Content Officer, working closely with Sharma. This elevation positions Booty in a central role for content strategy, a critical area given the division’s extensive portfolio of studios and franchises. The move underscores the importance of game content as a key differentiator in the competitive gaming market.
In her initial communication to the team, Sharma outlined a three-pronged strategy. First, she emphasized “great games,” highlighting the importance of memorable characters, compelling stories, and creative excellence. She pledged to empower studios, invest in iconic franchises, and support new ideas, framing Booty’s promotion as recognition of his understanding of “the craft and the challenges of building great games.”
The second pillar focuses on “the return of Xbox,” with a renewed commitment to the console as a core element of the brand’s identity after 25 years. The third area of focus is “the future of gaming,” exploring new business models and shared tools for developers and players in a multi-device gaming environment.
The transition, according to the company, has been in development for months and is designed to be orderly, with Spencer remaining in an advisory role through the summer. Formal leadership will transfer on February 23, 2026. The focus now shifts to execution: realizing the commitment to high-quality games, defining the role of the console in the overall strategy, and integrating the expansion into multiplatform gaming. The leadership change is set; the next phase will be measured by results.
