Former Tennis Pro David Marrero, Tunisia’s Davis Cup Captain Suspended in Anti-Corruption Probe
Former doubles world No. 5 David Marrero and Tunisia’s Davis Cup captain Malek Jaziri have been suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Association (ITIA) after admitting to violations of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program related to wild card rules.
Marrero confessed to four instances between 2022 and 2023 of paying and offering to pay for wild cards for himself and/or a doubles partner, while Jaziri admitted to conspiring with the Spaniard in one of those offenses. The ITIA prohibits both players from participating in any capacity – playing, coaching, or attending – at sanctioned tennis events during their suspensions. This case highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain integrity within professional tennis.
Marrero, the 2013 Nitto ATP Finals doubles champion alongside Fernando Verdasco, began a 31-month suspension on October 21, 2024, which will conclude on May 20, 2028. He was also fined $15,000, with $10,000 of that amount suspended. Jaziri, a former world No. 42 who achieved match wins at all four Grand Slam tournaments, received a $5,000 fine ($2,500 suspended) and a nine-month ban that started on October 28, 2024, and ends on July 27, 2026. The ITIA confirmed that both players cooperated with the investigation. These sanctions underscore the commitment to upholding fair play in the sport, as detailed in the ITF’s player support program, which aims to educate athletes on anti-corruption measures.
Officials stated that both suspensions are effective immediately, and the ITIA will continue to monitor compliance with the sanctions.
