Alex de Miñaur is proving why he’s the top seed at this week’s ABN AMRO Open. The Australian boasts the most wins of any player in this year’s field at the tournament, and finished last season with more hard-court victories than anyone else. He also leads all players in ATP 500 victories since 2023.
De Miñaur began his Rotterdam campaign on Tuesday, confidently defeating Arthur Fils 7-6(3), 6-2 in an hour and 32 minutes. The win improves his Lexus ATP Head2Head record against Fils to 2-1.
“It wasn’t going to be easy. I prepared for a battle, to face a challenge, and I was looking forward to it,” De Miñaur said after his match against Fils. “I haven’t had too many easy matches this year, and I’m taking it as a challenge, which I’m enjoying. It forces me to be prepared from the first ball.”
De Miñaur has reach close to winning the title in Rotterdam twice before (2024, 2025). Last year, Carlos Alcaraz denied him the trophy in the final, while Jannik Sinner took the title the season prior. With Tuesday’s victory, he improved his Infosys ATP win-loss record at the tournament to 14-5.
The world No. 8 is a proven performer at ATP 500 events, having won more matches in this category than any other player over the last three seasons.
Leaders in ATP 500 Victories (since 2023)
In the second round of Rotterdam, De Miñaur will face the winner of the match between 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka, who is playing his final professional season, and his compatriot Aleksandar Vukic.
Earlier on Tuesday, No. 7 seed Tallon Griekspoor began his home campaign with a hard-fought victory over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, winning 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 12 minutes.
Griekspoor saved all six break points he faced, according to Infosys ATP stats, and out-aced Mpetshi Perricard 10 to 7.
“It feels excellent to win here. I haven’t won many matches this year, so I’m happy to gain back to winning here in Rotterdam, a place I love. I’ve played some great matches here, and today wasn’t bad against a tough opponent,” said Griekspoor, who will next face Quentin Halys.
Halys defeated qualifier Mees Rottgering 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in one hour and 54 minutes. Meanwhile, Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Hugo Grenier 6-0, 6-4, in 64 minutes. Struff will play either Alexander Bublik or Hubert Hurkacz in the second round.
