Skywatchers are in for a treat in late 2025, with several astronomical events set to illuminate the night sky. These celestial displays, including meteor showers and a striking “supermoon,” offer a unique opportunity for observation and appreciation of the universe. Understanding these events can foster a greater connection to the natural world and inspire curiosity about space.

On December 5, 2025, the Geminid meteor shower and a supermoon will both be visible, according to an astronomer with the Langit Selatan community, Avivah Yamani. Additionally, a full moon at its closest point to Earth, known as a perigee, will coincide with the occultation of the star beta Tauri by the Moon.

The Moon will reach its closest approach to Earth – a distance of 356,963 kilometers – on December 4, 2025. The following day, under similar conditions, a full supermoon will be visible from sunset to dawn. This phenomenon makes the Moon appear larger and brighter in the sky.

During the supermoon, the Moon will appear to pass closely by the star beta Tauri, also known as Elnath, in an event called an occultation. The star will briefly disappear behind the Moon before becoming visible again. Observers in Indonesia, excluding parts of Sumatra, will be able to witness this event.

Generally, Elnath will be occulted beginning at 7:54 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) and lasting until 10:07 PM WIB. In Bandung, for example, the occultation will begin at 7:54 PM WIB and end at 8:51 PM WIB.

Looking ahead to the night of December 7, 2025, the Moon will appear near the planet Jupiter shortly before midnight and into the early morning hours. The Moon will rise at 8:35 PM WIB, followed by Jupiter just two minutes later.

The Langit Selatan community also highlights several meteor showers expected in late 2025. The peak of the Phoenicid meteor shower is anticipated on December 2, having begun on November 28.

This shower, visible until December 9, originates from the Phoenix constellation in the southern sky and produces approximately 12 meteors per hour, from sunset until around 3:00 AM WIB.

The Puppid-Velids meteor shower will also be active from December 1-15, 2025, with a peak expected on December 7. At its peak, observers could see around 10 meteors per hour streaking across the sky in the southeastern direction, starting when the Puppis constellation rises at 8:26 PM WIB and continuing until dawn.

Perhaps the most prolific shower will be the Geminids, active from December 4-20. The Langit Selatan community predicts up to 150 meteors per hour on December 14, 2025, during the peak of this event. The Geminid meteors will appear to radiate from the Gemini constellation, which rises around 8:00 PM WIB.

Finally, the Ursid meteor shower will occur from December 13-24, originating from the Ursa Minor constellation. However, this shower is best viewed from the Northern Hemisphere or locations above the equator. Observers in the Southern Hemisphere will find Ursa Minor appears close to the horizon with the sunrise, making it difficult to observe.
