Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke celebrated his 100th birthday on December 13th, and the iconic actor says he’s hoping for many more years to come. The milestone makes him one of the longest-living stars in the film and television industry, a testament to a career that has spanned decades and delighted generations.
Born Richard Wayne Van Dyke in 1925 in West Plains, Missouri, the beloved performer has gifted audiences with memorable roles in classics like Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Bye Bye Birdie, as well as beloved television series including The Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis: Murder. Van Dyke credits consistent physical activity as a key to his longevity, a habit he continues to this day.
“I’ve always been active. We still go to the gym three days a week,” he shared in an interview with Good Morning America, referring to his routine with his wife, Arlene Silver, whom he describes as a “health fanatic.” Despite some physical limitations, he joked, “I have a twisted leg, I don’t know what… but I still try to dance.”
This passion for dance is well-known to his fans, and Van Dyke has incorporated it into his fitness regimen. On the podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, he revealed he doesn’t simply walk between weight machines – he dances. “If I liked something, I overdid it. So I made movement fun,” he explained.
Podcast host Ted Danson confirmed the story, saying, “I’ve seen him several times working out on a machine and then literally dancing to the next one. It was incredible.” Following his workouts, Van Dyke enjoys two simple pleasures: a good bath and a nap. “It’s a great way to end the day,” he said with a smile.
Beyond exercise, Van Dyke emphasized the importance of companionship and the support he receives from his wife, Arlene Silver, as well as maintaining a positive mindset. In a recent interview with People, he explained that he has never harbored feelings of hatred or anger. “I always thought that anger corrodes the person inside. I never could really hate,” he reflected. He contrasted his experience with that of his father, who passed away young: “He lived angry at his situation and that shortened his life.”
While he’s now seen as a role model by many, Van Dyke admitted he didn’t always live a healthy lifestyle. He struggled with a cigarette addiction, but around the age of 50, he realized he had an addictive personality and decided to quit alcohol, cigarettes, and excess. “Probably that’s why I’m still here,” he reflected on the turning point that allowed him to detoxify his body and adopt healthier habits.
His philosophy on life is detailed in his book, 100 Rules for Living to 100: A Positive Guide to a Happy Life, which blends personal anecdotes, humor, and reflections on aging. The book’s release comes as interest in wellness and longevity continues to grow in the entertainment industry and beyond.
