Latvia will host “Digital Week 2026” from March 16th to 20th, an annual event designed to help citizens, businesses, educators, and IT professionals enhance their digital skills. The initiative will focus on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the role of technology in modern life. The event comes as digital access expands, though practical experience and skill levels vary among users.

INGŪNA PURAKALNE, Daudzeses pagasta bibliotēkas vadītāja, noted, “Our library most often receives requests for assistance with using the e-health platform – how to log in and schedule appointments with doctors. However, we don’t receive many requests for help, which leads me to believe that most residents of the parish are able to perform the necessary tasks in a digital format themselves.”

The “Digital Week 2026” initiative, taking place within the framework of the European “ALL Digital Weeks,” aims to foster public understanding of the importance of digital skills and provide opportunities for knowledge enhancement through both in-person and online events across Latvia. According to the Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association (LIKTA), government and municipal institutions, educational establishments, libraries, non-governmental organizations, and businesses are encouraged to participate by organizing their own events.

Partners interested in participating in and organizing events can apply through an application form on the Latvian Digital Skills Partnership website until February 1st. The initiative reflects a broader European trend, with 32.7% of individuals aged 16 to 74 in the European Union utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in 2025. The majority (25.1%) used these tools for personal purposes, while 15.1% applied them to work and 9.4% to formal education.

“During Digital Week, we invite everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to improve their skills and promote understanding of the opportunities offered by technology,” said LIKTA President Prof. Signe Bāliņa. “Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital skills significantly impact the labor market, entrepreneurship, and everyday life. Digital Week provides the potential to learn together, share experiences, and build a knowledgeable, competitive, and secure society.”

Thematic days planned for “Digital Week 2026” include: March 16th – Opening events; March 17th – Digital skills and artificial intelligence; and March 18th – [further details not provided]. The event underscores the growing importance of digital literacy as a key driver of economic growth and societal advancement.
