A raccoon caused a commotion and a bit of a mess at a liquor store in Virginia over the weekend after apparently getting into the store’s stock. The incident, which quickly spread across social media, highlights the increasing encounters between wildlife and populated areas.

On Saturday, November 29, an employee arriving for work at the liquor store in Ashland, Virginia, discovered the animal passed out in a bathroom. Police say the raccoon had broken into the store the previous night and sampled a variety of alcoholic beverages.

“Personally, I like raccoons,” said Samantha Martin, the local animal control officer, to reporters who gathered at the scene. “They’re very funny little critters. It fell through one of the ceiling tiles and got furious, so it drank it all.”

According to authorities, the raccoon managed to knock over lower shelves containing whiskey and other liquors, consuming a significant amount before becoming unconscious. Martin added that the animal was taken to a local animal shelter.

“Another day in the life of an animal control officer, I guess,” Martin said, adding that she found the situation amusing.

Police stated the raccoon entered the store overnight, causing a mess as it sampled the store’s offerings. Authorities playfully warned that they hoped the animal had learned that trespassing is not the answer.

After a few hours of sleep and with no apparent injuries – “aside from perhaps a hangover and poor life choices,” officials said – the raccoon was released back into the wild. Hanover County Animal Protection and Rescue stated they hoped the animal had learned a lesson about the consequences of trespassing.

“Officer Martin secured our masked bandit and transported him to the shelter to sober up before questioning,” the animal protection organization posted on Facebook.

While generally harmless, animal shelters and control organizations advise against interacting with raccoons, as they can carry parasites and transmit diseases such as rabies, salmonella, and distemper.

Raccoons typically inhabit forests and areas near rivers, but their presence in residential zones is becoming increasingly common as they search for food sources.
