Ed Sheeran is known worldwide for his chart-topping music, but the singer-songwriter is now making headlines for a dramatic physical change.A recent cover story in Men’s Health reveals a noticeably fitter Sheeran, signaling a shift towards prioritizing wellness alongside his demanding career. The 34-year-old artist details a five-year journey of lifestyle changes, from eliminating alcohol and cigarettes to embracing weightlifting and Pilates, a path he credits to fatherhood and a desire for sustained energy during his famously dynamic live performances.
Ed Sheeran is trading in his guitar-slinging image for one that includes a serious fitness routine. For nearly 15 years, fans have known the singer-songwriter as the red-haired musician with a knack for heartfelt ballads, but a recent cover shoot for Men’s Health is revealing a dramatically different side of the artist.
Sheeran debuted a noticeably transformed physique and a striking collection of new tattoos, prompting a wave of reactions from fans who are seeing their idol in a whole new light.
The 34-year-old musician appears to be embracing a holistic approach to wellness, recognizing the importance of physical health alongside mental wellbeing. He’s now sharing his journey with his followers, hoping to inspire them to prioritize their own health.
Over the past few years, Sheeran has quit smoking and alcohol and significantly reduced his meat consumption, resulting in a 14-kilogram (approximately 31-pound) weight loss.
As observers of a major pop star’s career, it’s easy to overlook the pressures of the entertainment industry, which can often be incredibly unhealthy.
“I was playing three nights in a row, and every morning when I’d do interviews, I’d be like, ‘Oh, I was up ‘til 6 a.m. drinking tequila and smoking cigarettes,’” Sheeran recalled. “That was seven days a week. I looked like I was 40.”
“I’d look in the mirror and just feel disgusting,” the artist admitted, reflecting on years of neglecting his health. He now realizes the importance of a healthy body and is determined to make a change.
“F*** it, I probably shouldn’t be drinking if I feel like that,” Sheeran realized.
The birth of his daughter, Lyra, in 2020 served as a major catalyst for this positive transformation. In those early days of fatherhood, Sheeran understood it was time to leave the late nights behind and focus on being a responsible parent.
“At 30, you’re not as resilient. I was losing my voice more. I was pulling muscles in my legs, pulling muscles in my back when I was on stage… And I wanted to feel like a superhero on stage,” he explained.
Over the last five years, Sheeran has established a routine that includes weightlifting, reformer Pilates, and running.
This dedication has led to the transformation he desired, making him not only a better father but also a more dynamic performer.
During his concerts, Sheeran performs on a circular, rotating platform that resembles a treadmill, allowing him to connect with all sections of the audience.
And with his newfound fitness, he’s able to jump around the stage for nearly two hours with the energy of a true athlete. This physical commitment adds another layer of excitement to his already captivating live shows.
