Confusion, sleep disturbances, or numbness and pain can signal underlying neurological issues, and investigations like electroencephalograms (EEG) and electromiography (EMG) play a crucial role in accurate diagnosis. These tests help healthcare professionals understand the complex workings of the nervous system and pinpoint the source of a patient’s symptoms.

Dr. Dorin Antal, a neurologist with expertise in epileptology and neuromodulation, explains the importance of these diagnostic tools. He has completed extensive training at institutions including Cleveland Clinic (USA), University Hospital Freiburg (Germany), and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (UK).

An EEG records the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp. It’s commonly used to diagnose and monitor conditions like epilepsy, sleep disorders, and brain tumors. According to Dr. Antal, EEG can also be used to assess brain function after a head injury.

EMG, assesses the health of muscles and the nerves that control them. This test involves inserting small needles into muscles to record electrical signals. EMG is helpful in diagnosing conditions such as muscular dystrophy, nerve compression, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dr. Antal has participated in numerous national and international courses focused on advanced techniques in epilepsy, and neurophysiology. In 2025, he attended the “ANZAN/ESA EEG and Clinical Epilepsy” course in Melbourne, Australia, and the SEEG course in Bangkok, Thailand. He also participated in the Advanced EPODES Course on Epilepsy Surgery in Brno in 2023, organized by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).

His research interests include multimodal evaluation in focal epilepsy, and he is currently a doctoral candidate at the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iași. Dr. Antal is the primary or co-author of 12 international and national medical articles, including “Semi-automated electric source imaging determines epileptogenicity of encephaloceles in temporal lobe epilepsy – Epilepsia, 2024” and “Combined MRI Morphometry and Source Imaging Guides Placement of Stereo-EEG Electrodes – Frontiers in Neurology, 2025”.

Dr. Antal also holds certifications as a Trainer and has expertise in neurosonology – Doppler carotid and transcranial. He offers consultations in epileptology and neurology, as well as various diagnostic procedures including EEG with interpretation, EMG with and without a needle, and ultrasound Doppler of the carotid and vertebral arteries.
