Five siblings died January 16 in Benha, Egypt, after a gas leak in their home, authorities said. The tragedy underscores the dangers of faulty gas appliances and the vulnerability of families living without consistent adult supervision.

According to neighbors, the children were home alone when the incident occurred. Their parents are reportedly working abroad, and an aunt discovered the scene and alerted emergency services. The aunt was also treated for gas inhalation at a local hospital.

Preliminary reports indicate a 15-year-old girl was showering when the gas water heater malfunctioned, causing an initial explosion and subsequent gas leak. The explosion killed the girl immediately, and the remaining four siblings died from gas poisoning.

The victims have been identified as Ibrahim.u, 15; Khadija, 14; Rokia, 13; Mariam, 12; and Janna, 8.

A team from the Benha Public Prosecution Office has arrived at the scene to investigate the cause of death and gather information from residents, according to reports.
