Elliot Page Reflects on Early Collaboration with James Gunn on Cult Film ‘Super’

Actor Elliot Page recently shared fond memories of working with director James Gunn on the 2010 superhero film Super, highlighting a positive and creatively trusting environment during production.

During a live recording of Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast alongside James McAvoy, Page described the set of Super as having a “nice vibe and energy,” praising Gunn’s ability to navigate the film’s tonal complexities. “With someone like James, you really trust him when you are pushing it and going far, that he’s gonna sort it out tonally,” Page stated. The film, starring Rainn Wilson, features Page as Libby, a comic book store clerk who becomes the sidekick to a self-made superhero.

Gunn also previously lauded Page’s understanding of the project, even before filming began. In a 2011 interview with CinemaBlend, Gunn explained he “loved [Page] as a person” and trusted their intellectual grasp of the role, noting Page introduced him to influential films like Ratcatcher that shaped the movie’s style. This early collaboration foreshadowed both artists’ subsequent successes in the superhero genre; Gunn would later helm the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and take the helm of the DC Universe, while Page became known for roles in the X-Men franchise and The Umbrella Academy.

Super, though initially obscure, has gained a cult following among fans of Gunn’s work, and its rediscovery highlights the director’s consistent vision and collaborative spirit. Both Page and Gunn are currently involved in major projects – Page is slated to appear in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, scheduled for release in 2026, and Gunn is preparing for the release of Superman and its sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

Gunn and Safran’s vision for the DC Universe is expected to be unveiled in greater detail in the coming months.
