A technical issue with the landing gear forced an emirates Airbus A380 to return to London Heathrow Airport shortly after departing for Dubai on New Year’s Eve. The flight, EK002, initiated a two-hour holding pattern to burn off fuel before a safe landing with emergency services standing by. The incident underscores the critical safety protocols in place for modern air travel and the potential for disruption even with the most advanced aircraft.

An Emirates jumbo jet returning to London Heathrow Airport from Dubai experienced a technical issue shortly after takeoff on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, prompting a safe but unsettling return for passengers.

According to reports, the Emirates Airbus A380 had just departed Heathrow at 2:32 PM GMT when pilots identified a problem with the landing gear. The crew elected to return to London, initiating a holding pattern for approximately two hours at 10,000 feet to burn off excess fuel before landing.

The aircraft ultimately touched down safely at 4:28 PM GMT, where emergency services were positioned on the runway. Passengers disembarked and were rebooked on alternative flights.

Emirates has apologized for the disruption, emphasizing that passenger safety remains its top priority. The decision to return to Heathrow was made as a precautionary measure.

“Emirates flight EK002 departed London Heathrow (LHR) en route to Dubai on December 31, 2025, at 13:40 GMT, but returned to LHR shortly after takeoff due to a technical fault,” a spokesperson for Emirates stated on Saturday, December 3, 2026.

“The flight landed safely at LHR and all passengers and crew disembarked. All passengers will be rebooked on the next available Emirates flights from LHR. Emirates apologizes for the inconvenience, but the safety of our passengers and crew is paramount and will not be compromised,” the spokesperson added.
