Microsoft is poised to further integrate PC gaming into its console ecosystem, as epic Games Store has confirmed its intention to be available on the next-generation Xbox at launch. This move signals a continued shift away from walled-garden platforms and towards a more open approach, reflecting the growing demand for cross-platform compatibility among gamers. The new xbox, currently codenamed “Magnus” and developed in partnership with AMD, is also anticipated to offer full backward compatibility with existing Xbox Series consoles-a key feature as the industry moves toward a potential generational transition between 2026 and 2027.

Epic Games Store will be available on the next generation of Xbox consoles at launch, the company has confirmed. The news comes from an interview with an Epic Games executive published by GameFile.

“We definitely intend to be on the new Xbox hardware, because, unless their policy changes, they’re telling us they’ll welcome that,” the executive stated. “And we’ll be there day one. That will likely require us to meet any requirements they have, building some sort of software that provides appropriate support.”

This integration represents a natural progression from current implementations on devices like the ROG Ally. However, the next-generation Xbox differs in its ambition to unify the entire existing Xbox ecosystem. The new console is being developed in partnership with AMD and appears to utilize a chip identified as “Magnus.”

The new hardware promises full compatibility with the current generation of Xbox Series consoles, including its backward compatibility features, and will also function concurrently as a PC-compatible device. This hybrid approach signals a significant shift in Microsoft’s strategy for future console development. The move reflects a broader trend of blurring lines between traditional gaming platforms and PC gaming.

Epic Games Store also indicated it may provide specific support in terms of adapting the store, potentially related to the user interface. This change could potentially impact other digital storefronts that may be integrated into the next generation of Xbox.

An official launch date for the next generation of Xbox consoles has not yet been announced, but industry rumors suggest a potential release window between 2026 and 2027.
