Train Travel in Europe Surpasses Flying in Comfort and Cost, Report Finds

A recent analysis indicates that traveling by train throughout Europe offers a more affordable, comfortable, and sustainable alternative to air travel, particularly with the use of a Eurail pass.

The report, based on a two-week journey across Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland in October 2022, detailed the benefits of utilizing a Eurail pass for unlimited train access. A weeklong pass purchased in 2022 cost $477, with similar passes currently available for approximately $337 in 2025, according to Eurail’s official website. The traveler reported a total cost of $560 for train travel, including upgrades to first and business class and overnight train fees.

Compared to an estimated $440 for equivalent flights, the train journey offered significant advantages, including more spacious seating, enhanced amenities like attendant service and larger restrooms, and the ability to enjoy scenic views. The convenience of boarding trains without lengthy airport security procedures was also highlighted. This shift towards rail travel aligns with growing concerns about the environmental impact of aviation.

Beyond cost and comfort, the traveler emphasized the sustainability benefits of train travel and the overall enhanced experience. Officials stated they anticipate continued growth in rail pass sales as travelers prioritize both affordability and eco-conscious travel options.
