Russell Secures Pole Position at Australian Grand Prix as Mercedes Locks Out Front Row

Melbourne, Australia – George Russell of Mercedes claimed a dominant pole position on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the Australian Grand Prix, setting a blistering pace in qualifying at Albert Park. Russell’s performance marks a strong start to the new Formula 1 season for the Silver Arrows, signaling their potential to challenge for the championship.

Russell topped the timesheets in the final qualifying session with a lap of 1m 18.518s, finishing 0.293s ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli, securing a front-row lockout for Mercedes. Isack Hadjar of Red Bull qualified in third, followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in fourth.

The qualifying session saw drama for reigning champion Max Verstappen, who crashed in Q1 and will start the race from 20th position.

Starting Grid for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix

Franco Colapinto will start the race from 16th position on Sunday. Sergio Pérez will begin the race in 18th place, just ahead of Valtteri Bottas.
