Formula 1 teams completed qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix with insights gained from the earlier sprint race. Given the current grid order, Mercedes was considered the clear favorite in qualifying. Fans were eager to see how much of a challenge Ferrari could present to the German team.

The first qualifying session, Q1, immediately showed Ferrari’s intent to compete. Charles Leclerc set the fastest time of the session (1:33.175), with a margin of 0.087 seconds over George Russell. “The car is good, it just gets a little loose in the corners sometimes,” Lewis Hamilton reported over the radio.

Leclerc continued to impress in Q2, achieving a time of 1:32.486 and taking the lead. Andrea Kimi Antonelli improved to 1:32.443, but the gap between Ferrari and Mercedes remained minimal, preventing any talk of German dominance.

– Something is wrong with the car. There is a lot of understeer – Russell reported at the end of Q2, suggesting that the front wing on his Mercedes wasn’t performing as expected. Mechanics replaced the component, but the 28-year-old’s issues in qualifying weren’t over.

After heading out onto the track in Q3, the Mercedes driver suddenly stopped, causing concern in the garage. Russell’s car was eventually restarted, but it became stuck in first gear. The British driver had no choice but to slowly drive back to the pits.

Russell’s problems allowed Antonelli (1:32.322) to take the lead after the first runs. Hamilton and Leclerc both made mistakes on their timed laps, which McLaren capitalized on. Surprisingly, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris moved into second and third positions, respectively.

Meanwhile, function continued in the Mercedes garage to attempt and reset Russell’s car. The British driver ultimately returned to the track with two minutes remaining in Q3.

Antonelli increased his pace in the final moments of qualifying (1:32.064), and Hamilton and Leclerc also improved their times, moving them behind the Italian. Russell completed a timed lap at the last moment, but was 0.222 seconds slower than his teammate, giving the 19-year-old his first career pole position!
