Fan Sues LeBron James Over Retirement Teaser, Claiming Financial Loss

A California man is pursuing legal action against LeBron James, alleging he was misled into purchasing expensive tickets for a future game based on a social media post that falsely implied an impending retirement announcement.

Andrew Garcia of Norwalk filed a claim Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court seeking $865.66 from James, citing “fraud, deception, misrepresentation, and any and all basis of legal recovery.” Garcia purchased two tickets for the March 31, 2026, Lakers game against the Cleveland Cavaliers after James posted a video on X and Instagram teasing “The Second Decision,” widely interpreted as a retirement announcement mirroring his 2010 departure from Cleveland. “I was like, ‘Holy s—, LeBron is going to retire! We’ve got to get tickets now,’” Garcia told reporters. He believed the game would be a significant event, akin to Kobe Bryant’s farewell tour, and wanted to witness James’ final game against his original team.

However, “The Second Decision” turned out to be an advertisement for Hennessy cognac. The surge in ticket demand following James’ post was substantial; Victory Live, a ticket resale data analyst, reported sales for 2025-26 Lakers games increased 25 times over the daily average on Monday. Average ticket prices jumped from $280 to $399 before normalizing by Wednesday. As of today, the lowest price for a Cavaliers-Lakers ticket on Ticketmaster is $141. This incident highlights the power of social media and celebrity endorsements to influence consumer behavior. Lakers coach JJ Redick stated yesterday that the organization was aware the post was an advertisement, saying, “We all knew it was an ad.”

Despite potential criticism, Garcia remains resolute in his legal pursuit. “If I was the type of individual that was bothered by people’s comments or reactions, would I have filed a small-claims lawsuit against LeBron James?” he said. He added that he would still be willing to spend the same amount, or more, to attend James’ actual retirement game, emphasizing the value of experiencing memorable moments. You can find more information about the Lakers schedule and ticket information on their official NBA website.

A trial date has been set for December 1st, and a response from James’ legal representation is pending.
