Oilers Place Mangiapane & Regula on Waivers, Recall Samanski & Howard

Edmonton Oilers players placed on waivers Sunday have gone unclaimed, according to Oilersnation’s Jason Gregor.

Both Andrew Mangiapane and Alec Regula will now report to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors and must play in one game for them before being eligible for recall.

Mangiapane clears. Regula also clears

The Oilers are expected to recall forwards Josh Samanski and Isaac Howard from the Condors, Gregor reported, a move that will allow Edmonton to maximize its cap space with Mattias Janmark expected to be placed on long-term injured reserve.

The Oilers signed Mangiapane to a two-year, $3.6-million AAV contract last summer, but the move hasn’t produced the desired results. Despite scoring seven goals this season – more than Trent Frederic, Adam Henrique, and Mattias Janmark combined – his 14 points in 52 games represent a significant drop in production from previous years.

Last year with the Washington Capitals, he recorded 14 goals and 28 points in 81 games, and the year prior he tallied 14 goals and 40 points in 75 games with the Calgary Flames. He even posted a remarkable 35 goals and 55 points in the 2021-22 season.

While his production has been solid relative to other bottom-six forwards on the Oilers this year, it falls short of expectations given his $3.6 million cap hit. The team has been actively seeking a trade partner since late December, and recent reports suggest a deal could be finalized by Friday’s 1 p.m. MT trade deadline.

Regula has appeared in 29 games for Edmonton this season but has struggled to establish himself in the NHL. He has three assists in those games, with his last NHL action coming on January 20. He was previously loaned to the Bakersfield Condors on February 18 on a conditioning stint before being recalled for Saturday’s game against the San Jose Sharks.

Samanski, 23, made his NHL debut on January 26 against the Anaheim Ducks, playing in five games before the Olympic break, where he represented Germany alongside Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl. He scored a goal and added an assist in those five games, even seeing time on Draisaitl’s line.

Signed by the Oilers as a free agent last summer, Samanski has spent most of the season with the Condors, registering eight goals and 31 points in 44 games while playing in all situations.

Howard, meanwhile, is on his second recall with the Oilers this season. He has appeared in 28 games with the team this season, scoring two goals and five points. He initially made the team out of training camp but was sent to the Condors in mid-November. His second NHL stint came in January, where he played 11 games before being reassigned. He has been impressive with the Condors, scoring 14 goals and 32 points in 30 games.

The Oilers schedule continues Tuesday with a home game against the Ottawa Senators, followed by a Friday night matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes and the start of a five-game road trip Sunday against the Vegas Golden Knights. The road trip will also include stops in Colorado, Dallas, and St. Louis.
