Colin Farrell Recalls Drunken On-Set Struggles with Tom Cruise During ‘Minority Report’ Filming
Actor Colin Farrell recounted a particularly challenging day on the set of the 2002 film Minority Report, stemming from a birthday celebration the night before that involved excessive drinking, leading to difficulties performing alongside co-star Tom Cruise.
Farrell detailed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert how he attempted to get his birthday, May 31st, off from filming, but was ultimately scheduled for a 6 a.m. pickup. He admitted to “getting up to all sorts of nonsense” the night prior and arriving on set disheveled. Assistant director David H. Venghaus reportedly told him, “You can’t go to the set like this,” to which Farrell requested “six Pacifico Cervezas and a packet of 20 Red.” He later acknowledged this behavior, noting he entered rehabilitation in 2006 and has been sober since.
The incident resulted in 46 takes of a single scene, requiring Farrell to deliver the line, “I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.” “I will never forget the line I had that I couldn’t get out,” Farrell said. He added, “Tom wasn’t very happy with me. Tom, who I love, was not very happy!” The struggles on set highlight the pressures of large-scale film productions and the challenges actors sometimes face with personal issues. Farrell’s experience offers a glimpse into the demanding environment of Hollywood filmmaking, a topic explored in depth by The Wrap.
Representatives for Cruise and Farrell have not yet commented on the renewed attention to the story. Further details regarding the production of Minority Report are available through the film’s official page on IMDb.
