A compelling competition has emerged in Barcelona’s attack,as both veteran Robert Lewandowski and rising star Ferran Torres vie for the starting striker position. Manager Hansi Flick faces a tactical dilemma as he weighs the experience of Lewandowski against the energy and recent goal-scoring form of Torres, with both players currently tied as the team’s leading scorers in La Liga. The dynamic has been further complex by recent performances and missed opportunities, signaling a potential shift in the pecking order as Los Blaugrana navigate a demanding schedule.
The battle for the starting striker role at Barcelona is heating up, with both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres proving their worth this season. Initially, manager Hansi Flick envisioned a natural transition between the veteran Lewandowski and the younger Torres as the focal point of the attack.
Torres seized the opportunity presented by Lewandowski’s early-season fitness issues, making a strong impression with his performances and demonstrating he’s ready to lead the line for the Catalan club. He quickly established himself as a key contributor, silencing any doubts about his ability to fill the crucial number nine position.
Lewandowski, known for his relentless competitiveness, remained determined to reclaim his spot once fully fit. The Polish international began to find the back of the net consistently, and currently, both players are tied as Barcelona’s leading scorers in La Liga with eight goals apiece – though Ferran has featured in two more league matches (14 to 12). In the Champions League, Lewandowski is yet to score, while Torres has already found the net twice.
Against Atlético Madrid, Flick opted to start Lewandowski, seemingly favoring the established star. The German coach has recently leaned towards the attacking trident that proved successful last season, particularly since Raphinha’s return to fitness. However, that could change in upcoming matches if Lewandowski doesn’t elevate his performance level. He’s failed to score in his last three appearances and has struggled to consistently integrate into the team’s overall play.
Lewandowski’s performance against Atlético was particularly concerning. He missed a penalty – his second of the season – with a poorly struck effort. He also failed to convert a spot-kick against Sevilla, a missed opportunity that could have leveled the score at 2-2. Against Simeone’s side, Lewandowski managed only one shot on target (saved brilliantly by Oblak) and didn’t rank among the team’s top five chance creators. He had the fewest involvements of the front three, with 27 touches compared to Raphinha’s 43 and Lamine Yamal’s 84.
Ferran Torres, meanwhile, is trending upwards. He came off the bench against Atlético and scored the decisive goal to make it 3-1, redeeming himself after missing a clear chance in the Champions League match against Chelsea. While he was a substitute against Alavés, he had previously bagged a brace against Athletic Club.
The competition between the two strikers is ultimately benefiting Barcelona, pushing both players to perform at their best. Their contrasting profiles also give Flick tactical flexibility, allowing him to choose the forward best suited to the specific demands of each match. Currently, Torres’s mobility, energy, and pressing ability make him a particularly valuable asset in the German manager’s system.

Lewandowski, a proven goalscorer, may not be as well-suited to the high-intensity, pressing style that Flick is implementing at Barcelona.
