Jaqueline scored a brace as Corinthians defeated Ferroviária 3-1 on Friday night to maintain their lead in the Brazilian Women’s Championship.
The match, played at Estádio da Fazendinha in São Paulo, opened the eighth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro Feminino. Corinthians entered the game as league leaders with 16 points, while Ferroviária sat in seventh place with 12 points.
Jaqueline struck first in the 15th minute of the first half, heading home a cross from Juliette to grant Corinthians an early advantage. She doubled her tally early in the second half, finishing off a cross from Andressa Alves in the 17th minute to develop it 2-0.
Ferroviária pulled one back through Maressa, who converted a penalty in the 23rd minute of the second half after Gabi Zanotti was adjudged to have fouled Mariana Santos in the box.
Corinthians restored their two-goal cushion late in the game when Johnson headed in a delivery from Belém in the 39th minute of the second half to seal the 3-1 victory.
The win lifted Corinthians to 19 points, extending their lead at the top of the table to three points over rivals Palmeiras and São Paulo, who still had matches to play in the round. Ferroviária remained on 12 points in seventh place.
Corinthians president Osmar Stabile attended the match at Fazendinha to watch the team, nicknamed the ‘Brabas’, secure the victory.
