Fiat is revamping its small car lineup with the Grande Panda, a new model poised to deliver a blend of practicality and style to the competitive city car segment. Building on the platform shared with other Stellantis brands, the Grande Panda distinguishes itself with a unique design and is offered in both hybrid and fully-electric variants, reflecting a growing consumer demand for efficient and environmentally conscious vehicles.Testing reveals a surprisingly capable vehicle, offering nimble handling and a cozy ride – all at a price point aiming to undercut many rivals in the European market.

The Fiat Grande Panda, the latest iteration of the popular city car, is making a strong impression with its blend of practicality, modern features, and surprisingly robust performance. While sharing a platform with other Stellantis brands like Citroën and Opel, the Grande Panda distinguishes itself through a clear emphasis on Fiat’s design language and driving experience, signaling a renewed focus on brand identity within the automotive group.

The new model’s foundation is the Smart car platform, also utilized by the Citroën C3 Aircross and the Opel Frontera, with powertrain options familiar from Peugeot vehicles. However, the Grande Panda’s overall aesthetic and detailed execution set it apart, offering a unique proposition in the competitive small car segment. This strategic differentiation is particularly noteworthy as Stellantis continues to consolidate its brand portfolio.

The Grande Panda, measuring four meters in length, offers nimble handling in urban environments and comfortable maneuverability in tight spaces. Beyond its city-centric design, the vehicle demonstrates surprising capability on highways, thanks to its 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 110 horsepower. Paired with a six-speed eDCT automatic transmission, the engine delivers over 200 Newton-meters of torque from 1750 rpm, providing ample power for a vehicle weighing just 1.2 tons.

The hybrid version demonstrates a smooth and responsive driving experience, maintaining a quiet cabin even at highway speeds. The vehicle reaches 100 km/h in approximately 11 seconds and has a top speed of 160 km/h. Fuel economy during testing averaged between 5.5 and 6 liters per 100 kilometers, partially attributable to the small 0.9 kWh battery supporting the hybrid system.

A New Chapter for the Panda Lineage

The Grande Panda represents a significant step forward for Fiat, offering a compelling combination of performance and practicality. The company’s previous success with the modern Panda, introduced in 2003, and its sporty 100 HP variant, set a high bar. The new model builds on this legacy, offering increased space and versatility while maintaining the brand’s signature agility.

The Grande Panda provides comfortable seating for four adults, a notable improvement over previous generations. Its dimensions – 1.76 meters wide and 1.58 meters high – contribute to a spacious interior, while the 2.5-meter wheelbase enhances stability and ride comfort.

The interior design stands out with its bold use of color and materials. The test vehicle featured UV-yellow accents, bamboo fiber trim, and a variety of colorful plastics. While some may prefer a more subdued aesthetic, the vibrant interior creates a cheerful and distinctive atmosphere. The Fiat-branded seats are surprisingly comfortable and positioned at a height that enhances visibility.

The Grande Panda offers a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance systems, meeting European safety standards. The rearview camera’s image quality is somewhat dated, but the overall system functionality is intuitive and user-friendly. Distinctive headlights contribute to the vehicle’s modern appearance and provide excellent illumination.

The trunk offers 412 liters of cargo space, sufficient for several suitcases. The rear seats can be folded down to create additional storage, a feature offered without an extra charge. The base Pop trim level of the mild-hybrid Grande Panda starts at 8.2 million Hungarian Forints, while the fully equipped La Prima version begins at 9.6 million Forints.

Efficiency Gains in the Electric Variant

The all-electric version of the Grande Panda shares many characteristics with the hybrid model but offers distinct advantages in terms of environmental impact. The electric variant’s cargo space is slightly reduced to 361 liters due to the battery placement, and the rear seat position is elevated. However, a unique feature is the integrated charging cable housed within the Fiat emblem on the front of the vehicle, eliminating the need for a separate cable storage compartment.

While electric vehicles are often associated with rapid acceleration, the electric Grande Panda delivers a more measured response. The electric motor produces 113 horsepower and 122 Nm of torque, resulting in a 0-100 km/h time of approximately 11 seconds, comparable to the hybrid version. The battery pack, with a gross capacity of 44 kilowatt-hours, provides a range of around 250 kilometers under typical driving conditions.

The electric Grande Panda can be charged via a 7-kilowatt charger, taking approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes for a full charge. An optional 11-kilowatt charger is available, reducing charging time to 2 hours and 50 minutes. The vehicle’s top speed is limited to 132 km/h. The electric Grande Panda is positioned as one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market, with the base Red trim level priced under 10 million Hungarian Forints, including a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, manual air conditioning, and power windows.
