FIFA Approves Commercials During Drink Breaks at 2026 World Cup

FIFA has given the green light to allow commercial advertising during drink breaks at the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico next summer.

With anticipated high temperatures across North America, FIFA announced in December that it would implement three-minute breaks in the middle of each half of the 104-match tournament this summer as a precautionary measure to ensure player safety.

Previously, drink breaks were limited to just one minute.

Broadcasters will have two options: display advertisements on a split screen, limited to FIFA sponsors, or show full-screen commercials as usual, according to the British Press Association (PA Media).

Advertisements will not begin within the first 20 seconds of the referee’s whistle to start the drink break, and must return to broadcast at least 30 seconds before play resumes.

In previous FIFA tournaments, such as the Club World Cup held last summer in the United States, drink breaks were activated when temperatures exceeded the permitted limit. However, FIFA emphasizes that the decision to apply them to all matches of this summer’s finals aims to ensure uniformity and consistency throughout the tournament.

The World Cup will kick off on June 11 with a match between Mexico and South Africa in Mexico City, with the final scheduled for July 19 in Fresh York/New Jersey.
