First Tunnel Excavation in the Carpathians on Sibiu-Pitești Highway Nears Completion

Turkish construction consortium Mapa-Cengiz is preparing for the first breakthrough of the Robești tunnel on the Sibiu-Pitești motorway, according to Cristian Pistol, general director of Romania’s National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR).

The development comes as function advances on Section 2 (Boița-Cornetu) of the A1 Sibiu-Pitești highway, where the consortium is readying for the initial excavation of the Pitești-Sibiu-bound gallery of the Robești tunnel, which spans 900 meters. Current progress shows the left bore has been excavated to 821 meters, while the right bore reaches 741 meters.

construction is advancing on the Boița 1 tunnel, featuring two galleries measuring 264 meters in the Sibiu-Pitești direction and 247 meters in the Pitești-Sibiu direction.

The Sibiu-Pitești motorway project includes a total of seven tunnels along Section 2, marking a significant infrastructure milestone for regional connectivity.
