David Lloyd Leisure Granted Approval for New Health Club in Bishop’s Cleeve

A large-scale health, fitness, and racquets club proposed by David Lloyd Leisure has been approved by Tewkesbury Borough Council today, October 30, 2025.

The new facility, planned for a 2.52 hectare site on Stoke Road on the outskirts of Bishop’s Cleeve, will feature an extensive range of amenities including three weather-protected tennis courts, six padel courts with canopies, indoor and outdoor swimming pools – totaling four pools – a gym, studio facilities, a spa, a Battle Box, and a children’s play area. A 315-space car park and cycle spaces are also included in the plans. The development represents a significant investment in local leisure infrastructure.

Local support for the David Lloyd club was strong, particularly from residents of the nearby Fairmont Estate, who previously expressed dissatisfaction with plans for industrial development on the same site. Bishop’s Cleeve Parish Council “strongly supports this application, and believes it to be a far more appropriate development both as a gateway to the village and given its proximity to a residential site,” and highlighted the employment opportunities and partnerships with local schools the centre will bring. One resident commented, “[It] will be an excellent addition to Bishop’s Cleeve and will reduce traffic, as it will avoid people having to leave the village to use similar facilities.” You can find more information about the benefits of physical activity on the NHS website.

While some concerns were raised regarding traffic and road safety, the council ultimately approved the plans, noting the benefits to residents’ mental and physical health. David Lloyd Clubs already operates a facility in Brockworth; this expansion will increase their presence in Gloucestershire. Further details about David Lloyd Leisure and their facilities can be found on their official website.

Council officials stated that work on the new health club is expected to begin in the new year, with an anticipated opening date in late 2026.
