Health officials in Spain‘s Aragon region have declared a flu epidemic as cases surge weeks earlier than typical, raising concerns about a potentially severe influenza season [[1]]. the outbreak is already impacting hospitals and prompting preventative measures, including readily available vaccination clinics and mask recommendations, particularly in the hard-hit province of Zaragoza. This early spike-occurring almost a month and a half before the typical onset last year-signals an unusual pattern of influenza activity across the country [[2]].
Flu cases are rapidly increasing in the Aragon region of Spain, with the area now officially experiencing an epidemic. The surge in influenza activity is prompting health officials to encourage vaccination and preventative measures as the virus circulates earlier than in recent years – a trend that could signal a challenging flu season ahead.
Over the past two weeks, the incidence of the flu has steadily climbed in Aragon, exceeding the established epidemic threshold. Last week, 63.4 cases were reported per 100,000 inhabitants. The province of Zaragoza is currently experiencing the highest concentration of cases, with 76.1 cases per 100,000 residents – more than double the rates seen in the provinces of Teruel and Huesca, which reported 28.9 and 30.7 cases per 100,000, respectively.
The increase in flu activity is also impacting local hospitals. Public hospitals in the Aragon community treated a total of 260 emergency cases related to respiratory illness last week, representing 2% of all emergency room visits, according to the Aragon Epidemiological Bulletin.
Nationwide, Spain is also experiencing a widespread flu outbreak. In Aragon, the virus is circulating almost a month and a half earlier than it did during the 2024 flu season. Last year, at this same time, the incidence rate was 15.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the epidemic didn’t take hold until the first week of January – a difference of more than 47 points compared to the current season.
Health officials have also identified a flu outbreak at a care facility in the province of Zaragoza, involving a total of 14 cases. Public Health authorities have issued recommendations to contain the spread of the virus within the facility.
VACCINATION AVAILABLE WITHOUT APPOINTMENT, MASKS RECOMMENDED
To improve access to flu vaccination and curb the spread of the virus, the Aragon Department of Health has scheduled two days of vaccination clinics this weekend at the Hospital Nuestra Señora de Gracia. These clinics will offer immunizations without requiring a prior appointment, and are intended for individuals within the recommended target groups. The clinics will operate from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Health officials are also advising the use of masks in healthcare settings, including health centers and hospitals. This recommendation is particularly emphasized in the province of Zaragoza, where the alert level has been raised to level two. While mask-wearing is not mandatory throughout the Aragon community, it is strongly encouraged as a preventative measure.
