France is joining a growing list of European nations planning a military presence in Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, amid escalating tensions with the United States over a potential acquisition. Sources within the French Ministry of Defense revealed the plans on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

The move follows similar announcements from Germany, Sweden, and Norway, all of which intend to send personnel to Greenland to explore collaborative security measures in the region. The increasing European interest comes as President Donald Trump continues to express his desire to purchase Greenland, a prospect that has raised concerns among Danish and Greenlandic officials.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called an emergency meeting of his Defense Council, scheduled for Thursday, January 15, 2026, to discuss the situation in Greenland alongside ongoing developments in Iran, according to sources at the Élysée Palace. This underscores the French government’s focus on both emerging international crises.

Le Monde newspaper reported, citing defense sources, that France will deploy a small contingent of mountain troops to Greenland as part of a joint exercise with Denmark, an invitation extended to other nations. Details of the deployment are expected to be announced by Macron during a speech to the armed forces at the Istres military base in southeastern France.

The French contingent will focus on Arctic territory exploration, Le Monde added. Prior to Macron’s address, he will convene with key ministers and military leaders at the Élysée Palace to assess the situations in both Greenland and Iran.

The urgency of the meeting reflects the worsening of both crises, officials said. Germany and Sweden announced their troop deployments earlier Wednesday, also citing the need to bolster security on the island and address growing tensions with the U.S.

“At the invitation of Denmark, Germany will participate with other European nations in a reconnaissance activity in Greenland between January 15 and 17,” the German Ministry of Defense stated.

President Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland just before a meeting between Vice President JD Vance, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt. The parties agreed to establish a high-level working group to seek a resolution to the dispute, according to reports.
