Portuguese authorities have detained eleven volunteer firefighters following allegations of sexual assault against a 19-year-old colleague at fire stations in Fundão and Soalheira. The alleged assaults, which include rape and sexual coercion, reportedly occurred after the victim completed his initial emergency calls, and investigators have recovered video evidence. The case highlights disturbing allegations of a forced initiation ritual within the fire department and raises serious questions about power dynamics and safety within Portugal’s volunteer fire service.

Portuguese authorities have detained eleven volunteer firefighters from Fundão on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old colleague. The alleged assaults, which include two counts of rape and one of sexual coercion, reportedly occurred within the fire station.

The investigation began after the young firefighter filed a complaint, which was supported by the command of the fire department, according to a statement released by the Judicial Police (PJ). Officials stated the fire department fully cooperated with the investigation.

Authorities allege the victim was subjected to “violent sexual acts” as part of a dubious initiation ritual following his first two emergency calls. Investigators reportedly discovered video recordings of the assaults, and it was the fire department commander who turned over the suspects to the PJ.

The alleged crimes took place on two separate occasions at the fire stations in Fundão and Soalheira, police said. The case underscores the potential for abuse of power within emergency response organizations.

“The detainees will be brought before the competent judicial authority for the application of appropriate coercive measures,” the PJ statement read. The inquiry is being led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Castelo Branco, with the investigation carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department of Guarda, in close coordination with the PJ’s Central Directorate.

José Sousa, the commander of the Fundão Volunteer Firefighters, stated that an internal investigation has been launched into the allegations. “Internally, we are currently conducting an inquiry. We will investigate whether there is grounds for disciplinary action,” Sousa explained to the Lusa news agency.

Sousa added that, “at this moment, there is no reason to suspend” the firefighters under investigation, emphasizing that the internal process “will draw heavily from the conclusions of the police investigation.”

Sousa affirmed that the command and the board of the Fundão Humanitarian Firefighters Association are committed to collaborating and resolving the situation. The incident raises concerns about oversight and accountability within Portugal’s volunteer fire service.
