Gaming Subscriptions & Libraries: Play More, Spend Less

As video game prices continue to climb – with new releases like Mario Kart World and the anticipated GTA VI exceeding previous price points – consumers are increasingly seeking more affordable ways to play. This trend is fueling growth in the gaming subscription market, offering access to vast libraries of titles for a monthly fee. This report examines the evolving landscape of gaming subscriptions, from established services like Xbox Game pass and PlayStation Plus to choice options like cloud gaming and even local libraries, as players adapt to a changing economic climate.

With gaming subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and EA Play, access to hundreds of titles is now possible for under $20 a month. Both casual and dedicated gamers can access a catalog of recent and retro games, offering savings of up to 90% compared to buying new!

Inflation Impacts the Video Game Market

Video game prices are on the rise, reflecting broader economic trends. For example, the latest Mario Kart World retails for $89.99. In 2017, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, still available on Nintendo, sold for just $59.99. That’s a price increase of over 50% in eight years. PlayStation is seeing a similar trend: the highly anticipated GTA VI, slated for release in May 2026, is already announced at over $100 for the standard edition, compared to less than $70 for the previous installment.

The increasing cost of video games is driven by economic conditions, rising production costs, and the sheer size of the market. In 2024, 38.3 million people in France played video games, up from 34 million in 2018. Today, the sector is worth over $5 billion, surpassing both cinema and book sales. This growth is prompting more players to seek affordable alternatives to continue gaming without breaking the bank.

A Cost-Effective Way to Play

Instead of purchasing games outright, a growing number of players are turning to cloud gaming platforms. These services offer monthly subscriptions that unlock access to a vast library of both classic and new releases, available for download or direct streaming. This shift reflects a broader trend toward access-based models in the entertainment industry.

For instance, Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass provides access to 50 games for $8.99 per month, 200 games for $12.99, and up to 400 games with a $26.99 monthly subscription.

The PlayStation Plus platform offers three tiers for online play – Essential, Extra, and Premium – with discounted annual subscription rates. A one-month Essential subscription costs $13.99, while an annual subscription is priced at $109.99 (approximately $12 and 94 euros). Other options include Nvidia GeForce Now ($10.99 per month) with access to 4,000 online games, and Amazon Luna ($9.99 per month, free for Prime members). Game publishers are also entering the market with their own online platforms, leveraging popular franchises like Ubisoft+ (starting at $7.99 per month) featuring Assassin’s Creed, and EA Play (from $5.99 monthly) with FIFA.

Beyond affordability, cloud gaming eliminates the need to invest in a gaming console. All that’s required is an internet connection and a compatible screen – a computer, smart TV, smartphone, or tablet.

Libraries Offer an Economical Alternative

Often overlooked, municipal libraries and media centers are becoming valuable resources for video game enthusiasts. An increasing number of institutions are offering a selection of games for loan, covering major consoles like Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. With a library card (often free or available for a small annual fee), players can discover new and classic titles at no cost. While loan periods are limited, this encourages more frequent play and completion of games – a way to avoid accumulating unplayed titles.
