German artist Gerhard Richter, 93, is offering a helping hand to those experiencing homelessness just before the holidays. He has donated five signed prints based on his renowned 1982 oil painting, “A Candle,” according to Dirk Kästel, spokesperson for the homeless aid organization “Art Helps Give,” speaking to the German Press Agency in Cologne.

The prints will be auctioned off to benefit the organization’s work. A smaller print of “A Candle” by Richter fetched €99,000 (approximately $107,000 USD) at auction in 2023, demonstrating the artist’s significant market value. Proceeds from the auction will go towards providing essential resources like food, clothing, and sleeping bags, as well as contributing to the construction of a new homeless shelter. The shelter will offer housing for 35 women and eight young people. “With Richter’s art donation, we can help many homeless people during the winter. This is a great Christmas gift for us,” Kästel said.
