German Intelligence Warns of Russian Interference in 2026 Regional Elections

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has issued a warning about potential Russian interference and sabotage targeting upcoming regional elections in 2026. The alert comes as concerns mount across Europe about Moscow’s escalating efforts to destabilize democratic processes.

Sinan Selen, head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), outlined the threat during a speech in Berlin on Monday. He indicated that Russia may intensify its influence operations and acts of sabotage as five German states prepare to hold elections.

These regional votes are seen as a key test for the government led by Friedrich Merz. The Alternative for Germany (AfD), a party often described as pro-Russian and anti-immigrant, is expected to make significant gains, potentially even gaining control of several regions.

Selen emphasized that Germany’s strong support for Ukraine and its role as a crucial logistical hub for NATO make it a prime target for Moscow. “We have repeatedly seen that elections play a significant role [in the organization of disinformation campaigns] and, as you know, several regional elections will be held in Germany next year,” he said, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Germany, along with other European nations, has accused Russia of conducting espionage, intimidation, sabotage, and cyberattacks for months – allegations Moscow denies. Concerns have also been raised about the AfD potentially exploiting parliamentary inquiry rights to gather intelligence on critical German infrastructure and relaying it to Russia. “We are being attacked here and now in Europe,” Selen declared in his address, describing Russia as “aggressive, offensive, and escalating.”

“There is no respite in sight,” he warned, adding that “all sectors of society can be affected,” particularly in the lead-up to the elections. Selen also noted that the evolving situation in Ukraine will likely influence how Russia targets Europe. The development underscores the heightened geopolitical tensions and the ongoing efforts to counter foreign interference in democratic processes.
