Nature vs. Architecture: Gigi Becali’s Church Project Stalled by Butterflies and Seagulls
Gigi Becali, the high-profile owner of FCSB, has found himself in an unlikely standoff with the natural world. The businessman’s efforts to finalize the construction of a wooden church in Techirghiol have hit a surreal roadblock, leaving the owner reportedly outraged.

The project has reached a standstill due to an unusual environmental obstacle: the protection of local wildlife. According to reports, Becali is currently unable to complete the roof of the structure.
In a statement regarding the delay, Becali highlighted the bizarre nature of the restriction, claiming, “put the roof because of a species of butterflies and some special seagulls.”
The disruption comes after a formal notification was filed by a butterfly protection association. The group has effectively blocked the completion of the church, sparking a heated reaction from the FCSB patron.
Becali did not hold back his frustration, exploding in anger over the claims that the construction is disruptive to the local fauna. “They say it scares the birds!” he exclaimed, according to further accounts of the dispute.
The conflict between the wealthy landowner and the environmentalists highlights the often-complicated intersection of private development and biodiversity conservation. For now, the roof of the Techirghiol church remains unfinished, held back by some of the region’s smallest inhabitants.
