Google is officially bringing artificial intelligence to the forefront of Gmail, marking what the company calls the “Gemini era” for its email service. The shift impacts over three billion users worldwide, transforming the inbox from a simple message repository into an AI-powered assistant.

The new features, built on Gemini 3, are designed to streamline email management by reducing the time spent reading, searching, and organizing messages. This move underscores the growing trend of integrating generative AI directly into everyday productivity tools.

What’s New

Perhaps the most prominent addition is AI Overviews, a feature already familiar to users of Google Search. Now available within Gmail, the search bar evolves beyond simple keyword filtering to function as a conversational assistant. Instead of manually sifting through numerous emails, users can pose direct questions, and Gmail will synthesize a response from relevant messages.

For example, asking about the status of an order will prompt the AI to gather information from various notifications, clearly displaying the items ordered, estimated delivery date, and current package location.

Google is also addressing a common email frustration: inbox clutter. AI Inbox offers a new view that complements existing tabs like Primary and Promotions, rather than replacing them. This feature scans incoming messages and highlights what truly matters.

Instead of a lengthy list of subjects, users see concise summaries outlining actionable items or important details, such as a medical appointment, an upcoming event, or a message requiring a prompt response. The goal is to quickly identify urgent matters without opening each email individually.

The rollout of these features will be phased. Google is initially launching to users in the United States and those with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions. AI Overviews will reach a broader audience more quickly, while AI Inbox is currently being tested with a limited group. A global expansion is planned for the coming months. Initially, support will be available only in English, with additional languages to be added soon, according to the company.
