Google has officially launched its new desktop application for Windows 11, bringing Gemini AI capabilities directly to PC users. The release, announced on April 17, 2026, introduces a native app designed to streamline access to Google Search, Lens, Discover, AI Mode, weather, and other services through a Spotlight Search-inspired interface. The Google app for desktop features a minimalistic design with quick access buttons to Google Lens and screen sharing, along with an Alt + Space keyboard shortcut for instant deployment. At its core, the application integrates Gemini AI, leveraging large language model (LLM)-powered search results to enhance user interactions. While it supports standard Google Search web queries and helps users locate installed apps, it currently does not have the ability to parse local files, documents, or system settings within Windows. According to Google’s blog post, the app is available exclusively for Windows machines at launch and is offered only in English. The rollout is global, though the company has not yet announced plans for macOS or Linux support, nor additional language localizations. This move follows earlier methods that allowed users to access Gemini on Windows via Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. Those approaches enabled Gemini to function like a regular desktop app, with Start menu integration, taskbar pinning, and resizable windows. The new native application represents a more direct and integrated solution for Windows users seeking AI-powered search and assistance. The launch underscores Google’s ongoing effort to expand Gemini’s accessibility across platforms, building on its existing presence in Android, iOS, and iPadOS ecosystems. By delivering a dedicated Windows experience, the company aims to provide a faster, more immediate way for users to engage with its AI technology directly from their desktops.
