Rail Traffic · Train service between Gothenburg and Stenungsund will be suspended from April 2, 2026, to March 2027 as extensive upgrades are made to the railway infrastructure. Passengers are advised to plan ahead, as bus replacements will be in effect.
Major work to replace the aging power supply system along the Bohus Line is underway, stretching from Gothenburg to Strömstad. The project is being completed in phases, and the section between Gothenburg and Stenungsund is scheduled for renovation beginning after Easter.
all train traffic on that route will be halted and replaced with bus service from April 2, 2026, through March 14, 2027. This disruption will affect travelers to and from the stations of Stenungsund, Stora Höga, Kode, Ytterby, and Gothenburg Central Station.
Bus Service Details
Direct bus routes will operate in both directions between Gothenburg and Stenungsund, as well as between Gothenburg and Ytterby. The frequency of bus service will match existing train schedules, and connections will be coordinated at Stenungsund. Route SNU will see an increase in the number of departures.
Commuters should anticipate longer travel times and are encouraged to check the Västtrafik To Travel app or the Västtrafik website for the latest information. Bicycles will not be permitted on the replacement buses.
Traffic Concerns
To mitigate increased road congestion during the railway closure, travelers are encouraged to utilize the bus replacements and other public transportation options whenever possible. Drivers are advised to avoid peak travel times. The Trafiken.nu app can provide real-time traffic updates and information on potential delays along your route.
Ahead of the train stoppage, improvements are being made to the flow of traffic on Route 168 – a heavily used road, particularly during the summer and rush hour – between Kungälvsmotet and Rollsbovägen.
Additional Rail Work
Even as the Gothenburg-Stenungsund line is closed, the Bohus Line is as well undergoing expansion with the addition of 1.5 km of double track and a new commuter rail station at Brunnsbo.
Further north on the Bohus Line, work continues to impact train service between Uddevalla and Strömstad, and these disruptions will continue to some extent until December 13, 2026. The ongoing infrastructure improvements aim to modernize the regional rail network and improve service for commuters.
