Commuters in western Sweden face significant disruptions as all train traffic between Gothenburg and Stenungsund will be replaced by bus service for over a year, beginning April 2, 2026. The extensive change is due to major upgrades to the Bohusbanan railway line, a key transportation corridor in the region.
The disruption will last until March 14, 2027, as Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, works to replace the aging power supply system along the entire Gothenburg to Strömstad route. The project is being carried out in stages, with the Gothenburg-Stenungsund section being the next phase of work. Trafiken.nu reports that buses will operate with the same frequency as the trains previously did, and schedules will be coordinated with connections in Stenungsund.
Stations affected by the change include Stenungsund, Stora Höga, Kode, Ytterby, and Gothenburg Central Station. Travelers are advised to plan their journeys in advance using the Västtrafik To Go app or the Västtrafik website. Bicycles will not be permitted on the replacement buses.
Officials are anticipating increased traffic congestion on roads during the railway closure and are encouraging commuters to utilize the replacement bus services and other public transportation options whenever possible. Drivers are also advised to avoid peak travel times. Västtrafik notes that measures are being taken to improve traffic flow on Route 168 between Kungälvsmotet and Rollsbovägen.
This isn’t the first phase of disruption on the Bohusbanan. Between August 2, 2025, and April 19, 2026, bus service replaced trains between Uddevalla and Strömstad. The current project represents a substantial investment in upgrading Sweden’s railway infrastructure. Via TT reports that the Swedish Transport Administration is accelerating the pace of railway improvements across the western part of the country.
The Bohusbanan railway, approximately 180 kilometers long, connects Gothenburg and Strömstad. This proves primarily a single-track line, with some double-track sections near Gothenburg. According to Wikipedia, the line is used by Västtrafik regional trains and, during the summer months, by SJ’s express trains to Stockholm.
