Nicosia – Turkish defense officials are considering deploying F-16 fighter jets to Northern Cyprus, according to sources within the Turkish Ministry of National Defense. The potential move comes amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing security concerns in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Ministry sources stated on Thursday, March 7, that “gradual planning is underway to ensure the security of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The deployment of F-16 aircraft is one of the options being evaluated.”
The consideration follows criticism leveled at the United Kingdom by the Republic of Cyprus regarding information sharing after an unmanned aerial vehicle attack on a British military base on the island. According to reports, Cyprus’s High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Kiryakos Kouros, expressed “disappointment” with the level of information provided by Britain.
The United Kingdom recently bolstered its presence on the island, deploying 400 additional personnel to its base in Cyprus to strengthen air defenses following a drone attack on the Akrotiri base on March 1. The attack occurred amid escalating conflict sparked by reported strikes by Israel and the United States against Iran.
Turkey, the United Kingdom and Greece all serve as guarantor powers for Cyprus. This potential deployment underscores the ongoing strategic importance of the region and the complex security dynamics at play.
