the 40th edition of the Goya Awards presented the Goya International Award to Susan Sarandon and the Goya Honorary Award to filmmaker, writer and journalist Gonzalo Suárez for his “surprising” and “pioneering” career spanning cinema, literature and journalism.
Barcelona played host to the 40th annual Goya Awards on Saturday, February 28th, celebrating the best in Spanish cinema. The ceremony, hosted by actor Luis Tosar and singer Rigoberta Bandini, saw ‘Los domingos’ take home the coveted Best Film award.
Patricia López Arnaiz was recognized as Best Leading Actress for her performance in ‘Los domingos’, while Jose Ramon Soroiz earned the Best Leading Actor award for his role in ‘Maspalomas’. Nagore Aramburu won Best Supporting Actress for ‘Los domingos’, and Álvaro Cervantes was named Best Supporting Actor for ‘Sorda’.
Miriam Garlo was awarded Best New Actress for her work in ‘Sorda’, and Antonio Fernández Gabarre took home the prize for Best New Actor for ‘Ciudad sin sueño’. Alauda Ruiz de Azúa was honored as Best Director for ‘Los domingos’, and the Best Original Screenplay award too went to Ruiz de Azúa for the same film.
The Goya Awards also recognized international talent, with ‘Valor sentimental’ earning the title of Best European Film and ‘Belén’ being named Best Ibero-American Film. Susan Sarandon received the Goya International Award, and filmmaker Gonzalo Suárez was presented with the Goya Honorary Award for his lifetime achievements.
