Surabaya, Indonesia – The leader of Nahdlatul Ulama, one of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organizations, addressed growing speculation regarding a potential vote of no confidence. The controversy comes as the organization navigates internal discussions about its future direction.
Yahya Cholil Staquf, also known as Gus Yahya, spoke briefly to reporters Saturday evening upon arriving at a coordination meeting of Nahdlatul Ulama’s regional leaders in Surabaya.
“This is about strengthening ties and coordinating among organizational leaders,” Gus Yahya said.

When asked if the meeting was related to the reported effort to remove him from his position, as detailed in a document circulating among members, Gus Yahya said he was unaware of the specifics.
He also stated he had not yet received a copy of the minutes from the November 20th meeting, signed by Rais Aam PBNU KH Miftachul Akhyar.
“I haven’t seen it myself. But we’ll see if anything has been prepared. I’ll share information as it becomes available,” Gus Yahya added.
CNNIndonesia.com reported that several regional Nahdlatul Ulama leaders had also arrived at the Hotel Navator in Surabaya. Security personnel from Banser NU, the organization’s volunteer force, were observed guarding the meeting room on the hotel’s third floor.
Meanwhile, Nahdlatul Ulama’s Secretary General Saifullah Yusuf, also known as Gus Ipul, urged calm amid the reports. He asked all members of the organization to avoid speculation while the matter is addressed internally.

Gus Ipul appealed to all Nahdlatul Ulama leaders, from the national level down to local branches, to remain calm and maintain a conducive atmosphere. He emphasized that the situation is a routine organizational matter being handled by the Syuriah PBNU through established internal procedures.
“This is a dynamic within the organization that is unfolding. I ask all leaders and members of Nahdlatul Ulama to remain calm, avoid being swayed by misleading news, and refrain from exacerbating misunderstandings,” Gus Ipul said in a statement Friday, November 21st. The internal debate underscores the complexities of leadership transitions within the influential religious organization.
