Belém, Brazil – With a Friday evening deadline looming, the United Nations’ annual climate conference, COP30, is reaching a critical juncture. Secretary-general António Guterres delivered an urgent appeal Thursday to nearly 200 nations, emphasizing the necessity of compromise as disagreements persist regarding financial aid for developing countries adn the phasing out of fossil fuels. The outcome of these negotiations will substantially impact global efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius,a target scientists say is crucial to avoiding the most catastrophic effects of climate change.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued a passionate plea to nearly 200 nations on Thursday, urging them to approach the final stages of climate negotiations in Brazil with boldness and compromise. The annual Conference of the Parties (COP) is set to conclude Friday evening, with key disagreements remaining on financing and fossil fuel reduction.

Speaking in Belém, Guterres urged world leaders to prioritize people over profit and adhere to scientific recommendations. “Now is the time for leadership. Be brave. Follow the science. Put people above profit,” he said.

He emphasized that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius – the goal agreed upon in Paris a decade ago – remains the “only red line.” Guterres also voiced strong support for a key demand from developing nations: tripling financial assistance for adaptation to climate change by 2030, calling it “imperative.”

The Secretary-General also welcomed “the growing coalition” of countries advocating for a clear commitment to phase out oil, gas, and coal, describing it as “a climate policy necessity.” Approximately 80 nations are pushing for this outcome, which is a central point of contention as the COP30 nears its conclusion.

Totschnig: Good Outcome Within Reach

Austria’s Environment Minister Norbert Totschnig sees a successful outcome at COP30 as increasingly likely. He praised the Brazilian presidency for demonstrating “skill” and “momentum” in the negotiations. Totschnig is scheduled to return to Austria before the conference ends due to prior commitments, with members of his delegation continuing to participate in discussions and votes.
