A hailstorm struck the municipality of Ibiraiaras, east of Passo Fundo in northern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, early Monday evening. The ice accumulated significantly on vegetation, but no damage reports have been filed as of yet.

Isolated unstable weather areas developed Monday afternoon and evening across northern Rio Grande do Sul. Forecasters had warned that localized hail was possible in the region.

The storm comes after a severe hailstorm caused widespread damage in Erechim, also in northern Rio Grande do Sul, on Sunday. The city was pelted with ice stones the size of golf balls and even oranges in a matter of minutes, causing panic and leaving more than 110 people injured. The mayor declared a state of emergency Sunday.

Health officials reported that most injuries were caused by roof tiles and debris dislodged by the hail. One person remains hospitalized in stable condition in the intensive care unit. Santa Terezinha Hospital and the Urgent Care Unit were overwhelmed with patients. Hospital de Caridade also increased staffing to handle the influx of injured individuals.

Several neighborhoods in Erechim remain without power, and residents are experiencing disruptions to phone and internet service. The mayor, Paulo Polis, described the event as “unprecedented,” stating that more than half the population – around 25,000 residents – was directly or indirectly affected. He added that four-millimeter roofing “turned into a sieve” from the force of the hail. The Expo Erechim event, which concluded Sunday and drew hundreds of visitors, may have contributed to the higher number of injuries.

According to updated figures from the Municipal Civil Defense, 113 people were injured, and 12 were displaced. Santa Terezinha Hospital treated 73 patients, Hospital de Caridade saw 15, and the Urgent Care Unit treated 25. Authorities estimate the severe weather impacted more than 6,495 families across the municipality.

Classes for municipal, state, and private schools were canceled Monday, November 24, due to the storm. A total of 35 schools sustained some type of damage, including 15 municipal schools and 20 state schools. Health services were also impacted, with damage reported at three UBS centers, three CAPS facilities, and three CRAS centers.

The storm damaged beds at Santa Terezinha Hospital, leading to the cancellation of elective surgeries Monday. The hospital is prioritizing victims of the storm and is not accepting less serious cases. The city has suspended selective waste collection, and residents are advised to store their trash until services are restored.
