US Downplays Concerns Over Hamas’s Slow Return of Hostage Remains

The United States government has indicated it does not currently believe Hamas has violated the ceasefire agreement with Israel by failing to return all the remains of deceased hostages, despite growing frustration from Israeli officials and families.

Two more bodies were repatriated yesterday, identified as 27-year-old Inbar Hayman and 39-year-old Sgt Maj Muhammad al-Atarash, both killed on October 7, 2023, according to the Israel Defense Forces. However, only nine of the 28 deceased hostages have been returned, with Hamas citing the need for time and specialized equipment to recover the others from the widespread destruction in Gaza. This delay has prompted Israel to limit the flow of promised aid into the territory. The stalled return of remains adds another layer of complexity to the fragile peace process, potentially undermining trust between the parties.

Senior advisors to President Donald Trump, outlining the implementation of his 20-point peace plan, stated that Hamas has acted in good faith by releasing all living hostages and is actively working to locate the remaining remains. One advisor suggested the full recovery could take weeks, proposing rewards for information from Gazan civilians and anticipating the arrival of Turkish experts to assist in the search. “Hamas is required to fulfill its part of the agreement and make the necessary efforts to return all the hostages to their families and to a dignified burial,” the IDF stated. The Hostages Families Forum acknowledged the return of Hayman and al-Atarash, while reiterating their demand for the return of the remaining 19 deceased hostages. Despite the US assessment, Israel’s defense minister has instructed the IDF to prepare a “comprehensive plan” to defeat Hamas should the peace plan falter. UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has urged Israel to fully open border crossings for aid, emphasizing that withholding assistance is unacceptable, while also calling on Hamas to intensify efforts to return the bodies. The agreement stipulated the return of all 48 hostages – 20 living and 28 deceased – with Israel reciprocating by releasing Palestinian prisoners; so far, Israel has returned the bodies of 90 Palestinians.

Officials say the US continues to monitor the situation closely and is working to facilitate the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
