Israel Receives Remains of Soldier Held in Gaza Since 2014
Israel received the remains of a soldier held by Hamas in Gaza for eleven years, marking a significant development in the ongoing truce negotiations and potentially paving the way for the return of other hostages.
The remains, believed to be those of Lt. Hadar Goldin, were transferred to Israeli authorities today by the Red Cross within Gaza and subsequently taken to the national forensic institute in Tel Aviv for confirmation. Hamas stated yesterday that they discovered the remains in a tunnel in Rafah. Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian confirmed, “Israel believes the remains now in our hands are of Lt. Hadar Goldin,” but emphasized forensic confirmation is pending, expected within hours. Goldin was killed on August 1, 2014, just two hours after a ceasefire took effect during that year’s conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The return of Goldin’s remains closes a painful chapter for his family, who have campaigned tirelessly for his recovery. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated at a cabinet meeting that holding the body for so long caused “great agony” for the family, who can now give him a Jewish burial. This case highlights the complex humanitarian issues surrounding the conflict, as detailed by organizations like the International Committee of the Red Cross.
While Goldin’s remains have been recovered, four other Israeli hostages remain in Gaza. As part of the truce deal, militants have returned the remains of 23 hostages since October 10th, receiving the remains of 15 Palestinians from Israel in exchange. Further complicating the situation, Israeli media reports suggest Hamas previously delayed the release of Goldin’s body in an attempt to negotiate safe passage for militants trapped in Rafah, though Gila Gamliel, Israel’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, stated Israel is not engaging in such negotiations. Netanyahu affirmed that Israel will continue its efforts to bring home all Israelis still held across enemy lines.
