Health Ministry Investigates Death Claim Linked to Viral Skin-Lightening Supplement
The Malaysian Health Ministry is investigating claims that a woman died after consuming a health supplement recently promoted on social media, a case raising concerns about the unregulated sale of health products online.
The Ministry’s Food Safety and Quality Division (BKKM) stated preliminary checks revealed the product contained glutathione, an ingredient listed on the country’s Negative List – a compilation of prohibited substances under the Drug Registration Guidance Document (DRGD). BKKM also found the supplement was being marketed on e-commerce platforms and social media channels. “Therefore, the product does not comply with Section 13B(2)(d) of the Food Act 1983, which prohibits the inclusion of any substance not permitted under the Act or its regulations,” the division said in a statement today.
The investigation was prompted by a social media post on Threads alleging a woman’s death after taking a RM20 supplement marketed for skin-lightening. While BKKM is working to verify the authenticity of the original claim, initial inquiries have not uncovered corroborating posts from family or friends confirming the death. Consumers are increasingly turning to online sources for health and wellness products, sometimes bypassing crucial safety regulations. Anyone with information relevant to the investigation is urged to contact BKKM at 03-88850796 or via email at [email protected].
BKKM is currently examining product labeling, ingredients, manufacturing facilities, importers, and distribution networks. The Ministry will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the investigation progresses, and encourages citizens to check product safety information on the Ministry of Health website and resources like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for guidance on safe supplement use.
