Legendary game designer Hideo Kojima has revealed that Super Mario Bros. profoundly impacted his decision to pursue a career in the video game industry. The creator of acclaimed franchises like Metal Gear and Death Stranding shared his experience in a recent interview with Wired.

When asked about the game he’s played the most, Kojima responded that it was the original Super Mario Bros., first released for the Famicom on September 13, 1985. The title, created by Shigeru Miyamoto, revolutionized the gaming landscape and left a lasting impression on the young Kojima. This early exposure to innovative game design helped shape the future of interactive entertainment.

A Pivotal Game in Kojima’s Life

“I played it for a year,” Kojima recalled, adding, “I was a university student. I skipped school to play it at home.” He emphasized the game’s significance, stating, “Without Super Mario, I probably wouldn’t be in this industry… Honestly, I can’t play it now.”

Kojima further elaborated on the game’s impact, describing it as a side-scrolling action game where Mario moves from left to right. “Basically, he just jumps, but there’s a dash button. Using that button, along with the jump, subtly changes the trajectory of the jump to attack or dodge,” he explained. “It hardly had a story, but it gave you the feeling of living an adventure. When I saw that, even though it was pixel art without a story, I felt that someday this medium would surpass movies. That conviction is what brought me into the video game industry.”
